A new center dedicated to empowering women in business and technology has opened its doors in Schaerbeek, Brussels, marking a significant milestone in bridging the gender gap in the tech industry. The hub, established by the Womenpreneur-Initiative, aims to provide a platform for women to access technology-focused training, entrepreneurial support, and invaluable networking opportunities.
A Space for Learning and Growth
The Womenpreneur Space is set to offer a variety of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses aimed at women seeking to enter or advance in the technology sector. Ranging from graphic design and digital marketing to cybersecurity and tech repairs, the courses will provide essential skills for women eager to break into traditionally male-dominated fields. Sana Afouaiz, the founder and director of Womenpreneur-Initiative, believes that the hub will make a tangible difference in women’s access to technology and entrepreneurship.
“We wanted to create a space exclusively for women, where they can gain the skills needed to succeed in tech,” said Afouaiz. “The new hub brings all our training courses under one roof, fostering connections and offering a strong support network.”
Breaking Barriers in Schaerbeek
Located near Brussels North train station, the hub has been strategically placed in Schaerbeek, a neighborhood with high unemployment rates, particularly among women of immigrant origin. The initiative aims not only to provide essential job skills but also to challenge stereotypes and change the social dynamics of the area.
“This neighborhood is symbolic for us. We want to provide opportunities for women who face greater challenges when it comes to employment,” Afouaiz said. “Our goal is to offer training that can lead to real career opportunities and contribute to a more vibrant, economically active community.”
Courses and Career Support
In its first year, the Womenpreneur Space will offer six technology courses with a capacity for 115 participants. The hub features two classrooms and a collaborative workspace where women can work on their projects or develop their business ideas. In addition to tech skills training, the hub also offers entrepreneurial guidance, mentorship, and advice for women interested in starting their own businesses.
The courses have already garnered substantial interest, with many applicants eager to join. Diane, a student currently enrolled in a graphic design course, shared her positive experience: “After taking a tech-focused module, I was excited to dive deeper into graphic design. The supportive environment and knowledgeable trainers have really helped me regain confidence after being out of the workforce for two years.”
Shaima, another student who has completed multiple courses with Womenpreneur-Initiative, emphasized how important this initiative is for women: “It’s a great opportunity to enter the digital world, especially in an industry where men tend to dominate. The courses are free, and it’s a space just for women. It’s empowering to meet other women with the same interests.”
Support and Expansion
The Womenpreneur Space has received backing from multiple partners, including the Brussels Region government, SNCB (which provided the building for two years), VINCI Energies, Loterie Nationale, and Belfius. Brussels Minister for Employment, Bernard Clerfayt, praised the initiative, noting that too few women choose careers in technology despite growing demand for tech talent.
“To tackle talent shortages, we must support initiatives like this,” Clerfayt stated. “The Schaerbeek location is ideal, as it’s accessible and located near disadvantaged neighborhoods where female employment rates are lower. This project will not only provide more women with access to ICT careers but also help elevate the local community.”
With plans for further expansion, the Womenpreneur-Initiative hopes to continue creating opportunities for women across Brussels and beyond. The new hub stands as a testament to the importance of inclusive spaces and dedicated support systems in driving positive change for women in business and technology.
