Transforming Brussels’ European quarter into a sustainable city district!

Article Summary

In a move towards sustainability, the European Commission has announced plans to develop approximately 300,000 m² of office space at the heart of Brussels. The project, supported by Plusoffice Architects and Cityforward, plans to transform the city’s European Quarter into a green and vibrant neighborhood.

As part of the effort to reduce carbon emissions, the European Commission is selling back 21 buildings to the city of Brussels. By adopting hybrid and remote working practices, the Commission aims to eliminate high carbon footprint from office buildings, aligning with the objectives of the European Green Deal and its mission to reduce emissions by 55% before 2030. Cityforward and Ethias will lead the transformation of 300,000 m² of office space into sustainable buildings, including residential units, over the coming years.

The goal is to create a perfect mix of offices, public and commercial facilities, green spaces, and various types of homes, all while fostering synergy and collaboration among the stakeholders. The core of the project’s vision is sustainability, with Cityforward and the design team prioritizing energy efficiency in offices, reducing CO2 emissions, encouraging renewable energy sources, improving mobility in the district, and creating new green spaces. The ultimate goal is to have a positive impact on the environment and enhance the well-being and quality of life for the residents, workers, shoppers, and visitors in the area. We can not wait to witness the green revolution of Brussels’European Quarter!
