Brexit and the new Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) caused a strong payment traffic growth in our country throughout 2019. The National Bank has issued eight new licences so far this year.

While two well-known fund transfer companies (Moneygram and eBury) had already decidedto transfer their EU activities from the United Kingdom to Belgium in 2017, three more companies have settled in Belgium in 2019, following the UK's decision to withdraw from the EU. The National Bank has recently granted authorisations to Worldremit, Transferwise and Prepayment Solutions SA (Edenred group).

Several of these new players belong to the world's leading money transfer groups, as Belgium has quickly become an important location for this activity. Discussions are ongoing with other companies that consider relocating their EU activities to Belgium.
